In 2005, Ryan was injured while in Iraq and is now confined to a wheelchair, the result of severe head injury, that normal communications disrupted brain to the muscles in his legs, left arm and elsewhere. Despite these obstacles, he will participate in his first marathon, the route traveled in a specially equipped bicycle wheel, while the cart is driven by the "legs" - former Marine Staff Sgt. Bryan Purcell.Because of Sgt. Ryan's physical condition, special travel arrangements necessary to transport him from his family home in Ellenville, NY, to Washington, DC He can not fly or drive a car or a vehicle modified and must travel with two medical assistants. Adirondack Trailways, based in New York, donated the use of 45-foot buses, which are accessible to wheelchair passengers that Ryan's family and supporters will bring to Washington, serving as a transport in the city for Ryan during the race.
